    ABOUT THE SERVICE

    Sandstone Retaining Walls

Sandstone retaining walls are built from natural stone blocks — quarried locally or sourced as recycled heritage stone — stacked with or without mortar to form a gravity wall. It is the defining material of Sydney's built landscape, because the city sits on a platform of Hawkesbury sandstone.

We construct sandstone walls across A-grade dimensional blocks (uniform, formal finish), B-grade stone (characterful and more accessible), random rock-faced dry-stack, and recycled or salvaged sandstone for heritage-sensitive properties. Each grade suits a different budget and architectural brief without compromising structural intent.

    TYPES & GRADES

    Types & grades

    A-grade dimensional sandstone

Uniform blocks, formal finish, premium price point

    B-grade sandstone

Less uniform, more character, more accessible cost

    Random / rock-faced dry-stack

    Natural appearance, skilled stonemason installation

    Recycled and salvaged sandstone

Ideal for heritage and federation properties

Ideal for: Heritage suburbs such as Paddington, Balmain, Glebe and Woollahra; premium North Shore and Blue Mountains properties; terraced gardens, feature entries, letterbox plinths and garden steps; sites where Hawkesbury sandstone is already exposed during excavation.

    OUR PROCESS

How we build your sandstone wall

Every step is adapted to sandstone — not a generic retaining wall checklist.

    1

    Excavate & assess site geology

We excavate the retained area, confirm soil conditions and check for exposed Hawkesbury sandstone that can be incorporated or matched to the wall design.

    2

Provide design advice & stone grade selection

We advise on A-grade, B-grade, dry-stack or recycled stone to suit your property style, council context and budget — including heritage considerations where applicable.

    3

    Pour concrete footings

Sandstone gravity walls need adequate footing depth and width for the retained height. We form and pour footings to engineer or site-specific specifications before any stone is laid.

    4

    Experienced sandstone wall builders

Our stonemasons cut, shape and set each block — whether mortared or dry-stacked — ensuring tight joints, correct batter and a finish appropriate to the stone grade selected.

    5

    Install steel reinforcement if required

Taller or load-bearing walls may require steel reinforcement within the footing or core. We coordinate engineering requirements and install reinforcement before backfill.

    6

Waterproof & drain the back of the wall

We install ag pipe, filter fabric and free-draining backfill behind the wall. Sandstone is porous — managing hydrostatic pressure is critical to a wall that lasts 100 years.

    7

Supply & install turf and plants if required

We finish surrounding levels, cap the wall where specified, and can supply turf, garden beds and planting to complete the landscape integration.

Why choose us for Sandstone retaining walls
    WHY CHOOSE US

    Why choose us for sandstone

Sandstone is the most technically demanding retaining wall material — irregular stone shapes, heritage compliance and gravity-wall physics require experienced stonemasons, not general labourers. We bring genuine sandstone expertise to every project.

We assess retained height, surcharge loads and drainage behaviour before recommending stone grade and wall thickness — structural integrity and council compliance are built into the design, not added after problems appear.

Retaining walls in NSW are governed by the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008, local Development Control Plans, and AS 4678 — the Australian standard for retaining walls. We guide you through exempt, CDC and DA pathways and handle engineering coordination for walls above council thresholds — including the stricter requirements of Ku-ring-gai, Northern Beaches and North Shore councils.

Every sandstone wall we build includes a designed drainage system — ag pipe, filter fabric and free-draining backfill. Drainage failure is the leading cause of retaining wall collapse in Sydney, and it is the detail most often skipped.

Call (02) 9139 8245 for a site review. We will inspect your levels, discuss stone grades and give you an honest picture of cost, timeline and what council approval your wall height and location requires.

    BENEFITS

    Benefits of Sandstone

    Distinctive Sydney identity

No other material connects a property to Sydney's geology and architectural heritage like local Hawkesbury sandstone.

    100+ year lifespan

Properly built with correct footings and drainage, sandstone walls routinely outlast every other mainstream retaining material.

    Property value enhancement

Premium street appeal and heritage character that buyers in Sydney's established suburbs actively seek out.

    Heritage & federation compliance

The right choice — often the only acceptable choice — for heritage-listed and conservation-area properties across inner Sydney.

    Improves with age

Sandstone develops patina and character over decades. A well-built wall looks better at year twenty than year one.

    Recycled stone options

Salvaged sandstone delivers authentic heritage character and supports sustainable reuse on sensitive sites.

    FAQ

    Sandstone retaining wall questions

Sydney is built on Hawkesbury sandstone — the stone is part of the city's geological and architectural identity. Sandstone walls deliver unmatched heritage character, last 100 years or more with correct drainage, and add genuine property value in premium suburbs. It is the most expensive option, but for heritage properties and high-end landscaping there is no equivalent substitute.

A-grade sandstone is dimensional and uniform — suited to formal, high-end finishes. B-grade is less uniform with more natural variation, offering character at a lower price point. Random rock-faced stone is dry-stacked for a rugged natural look. Recycled or salvaged sandstone is sourced from demolition or site excavation and is often specified for heritage and federation properties in conservation areas.

Rules depend on wall height, location and your local council. Walls under ~600 mm may be exempt in residential zones if they are not on a boundary or near drainage infrastructure. Walls between 600 mm and 1 m may qualify as Complying Development. Above 1 m typically requires a DA or CDC with structural engineering. Boundary walls often need approval regardless of height. Drainage is the most common cause of council rejection and structural failure — every wall we build includes a designed drainage system

Installed sandstone retaining walls in Sydney typically range from $400 to $805 per linear metre at around 1 m height including footings, depending on stone grade, site access, wall height and engineering requirements. Sandstone is the most labour-intensive material because each block must be selected and fitted. We provide itemised quotes after a site visit so you know exactly what you are paying for.

Often yes. Many Sydney sites expose Hawkesbury sandstone during excavation for pools, driveways or foundations. We assess whether on-site stone is suitable for wall construction — considering size, quality and quantity — and can incorporate it into the design, reducing material cost and connecting the wall to the site's natural geology.

Critical. Sandstone is naturally porous, which means water moves through the stone face — but hydrostatic pressure builds behind the wall if drainage is inadequate. We install ag pipe, geotextile filter fabric and free-draining gravel backfill on every sandstone wall. Drainage failure, not stone quality, is the leading cause of retaining wall collapse in Sydney's heavy rain events.
