    ABOUT THE SERVICE

    Brick Retaining Walls

Brick retaining walls are built from clay brick units laid in mortar — as reinforced cantilever walls, gravity walls or double-skin construction with a concrete core — to hold back soil while complementing the architecture of your home. In a city where brick veneer and full-brick houses dominate established suburbs, a matching brick retaining wall is often the most coherent landscape choice.

We build matching-brick walls to blend with your existing facade, feature-brick walls for deliberate contrast, and rendered brick for a clean contemporary finish. Where full sandstone is cost-prohibitive but heritage character matters, recycled brick offers a sympathetic alternative in suburbs like Paddington and Balmain.

    TYPES & GRADES

    Types & grades

    Matching brick

Selected to blend with your existing home — the most common request in established Sydney suburbs

    Feature brick

Deliberate colour or texture contrast for a designed landscape statement

    Rendered brick

Acrylic render over brick for a smooth, modern finish that can be colour-matched

    Reinforced core brick

Double-skin construction with concrete and steel core for taller structural walls

Ideal for: Established suburban homes where the retaining wall should match existing brickwork; heritage-adjacent properties where sandstone is prohibitively expensive; formal garden and front-yard landscapes; renovators upgrading one area of the garden without a full landscape overhaul.

    OUR PROCESS

How we build your brick wall

Every step is adapted to brick — not a generic retaining wall checklist.

    1

    Excavate the retained area

We cut the batter, confirm soil conditions and assess footing requirements — brick retaining walls need solid footings and correct drainage from the start or they will crack.

    2

Provide design advice & brick selection

We help you select matching, feature or rendered brick to complement your home's existing facade — sourcing brick to blend with older Sydney stock where possible.

    3

    Pour concrete footings

Brick retaining walls need strip footings sized for retained height and wall type. We form and pour footings to engineer or site-specific standards before bricklaying begins.

    4

Lay brick courses & install reinforcement

Our bricklayers lay courses to line and level, installing wall ties, reinforcement and core fill where the wall is structural — not a garden edging shortcut.

    5

    Install weep holes & drainage

Weep holes through the brick skin and ag pipe behind the wall are essential. Without them, moisture trapped behind the wall causes cracking, efflorescence and structural movement.

    6

Apply render or capings if required

We finish with acrylic render, bullnose capings or soldier-course detailing to protect the wall top and complete the appearance.

    7

Supply & install turf and plants if required

We complete surrounding levels and integrate garden beds and planting to finish the landscape around your new wall.

Why choose us for Brick retaining walls
    WHY CHOOSE US

    Why choose us for brick

Matching brick is harder than it sounds — Sydney homes built across different decades use different brick sizes, colours and mortar profiles. We source and lay brick to blend with your existing facade, not simply use whatever is in stock.

Brick retaining walls fail when footings are undersized or weep holes are omitted. We build both correctly on every project — the two most common causes of brick wall defects in Sydney are inadequate footings and trapped moisture.

Retaining walls in NSW are governed by the State Environmental Planning Policy (Exempt and Complying Development Codes) 2008, local Development Control Plans, and AS 4678 — the Australian standard for retaining walls. Even straightforward brick garden walls need correct compliance assessment. DIY brick walls on boundaries or above 600 mm can trigger DA requirements that homeowners do not anticipate — we clarify this before work begins.

Drainage behind brick walls is as critical as in any retaining system. We install ag pipe, filter fabric and free-draining backfill, and detail weep holes at the correct spacing to satisfy both structural performance and council inspection.

Call (02) 9139 8245 for a site review. Bring photos of your existing brickwork — we will advise on matching options, cost and council requirements for your wall height and location.

    BENEFITS

    Benefits of Brick

    Matches your home

The strongest argument for brick — a retaining wall that looks like it was always part of your house, not added as an afterthought.

    Street appeal & resale

Cohesive brickwork from house to garden wall supports street appeal in established Sydney suburbs where buyers notice detail.

    Wide colour & texture range

From classic reds and creams to contemporary charcoal — brick offers more design variation than most homeowners expect.

    Decades of service life

Correctly footed and drained brick retaining walls routinely perform for 50 years or more.

    Heritage-sympathetic option

Recycled brick provides character in heritage-adjacent suburbs where sandstone is beyond budget.

    Render for modern finish

Acrylic render over brick delivers a clean contemporary look without changing the structural system.

    FAQ

    Brick retaining wall questions

In most cases, yes — or close enough that the wall reads as intentional. Sydney homes use different brick profiles across decades, so matching sometimes requires sourcing from specialist suppliers or selecting the closest available blend. Bring photos or a sample brick to your site visit and we will advise on the best match.

Yes — always. Weep holes allow moisture behind the wall to escape, preventing hydrostatic pressure and efflorescence that cracks brick and mortar. We detail weep holes at correct spacing on every brick retaining wall, combined with ag pipe and free-draining backfill behind the wall.

Low garden walls under ~600 mm may be exempt if not on a boundary. Between 600 mm and 1 m may qualify as Complying Development. Above 1 m typically requires a DA or CDC with engineering. Boundary brick walls often need approval regardless of height — and DIY brick walls are not exempt from compliance rules. Drainage is the most common cause of council rejection and structural failure — every wall we build includes a designed drainage system

Brick retaining walls typically range from $250 to $650 per square metre installed, depending on brick type, wall height, reinforcement requirements and whether the wall is matching, feature or rendered. Bricklaying labour is a significant cost component. We provide written quotes after a site visit.

Heritage-listed and conservation-area properties often require sandstone or materials that match the original fabric. Where sandstone is prohibitively expensive, recycled brick can provide a sympathetic alternative in heritage-adjacent suburbs — but council requirements vary. We advise on what your LGA will accept before you commit to a material.

Critical. Brick is porous and rigid — water trapped behind the wall causes mortar deterioration, cracking and outward movement. Drainage is the number one cause of council rejection and structural failure in retaining walls across NSW. We install a full drainage system on every brick wall we build.
