Excavate the retained area

We cut the batter, confirm soil conditions and assess footing requirements — brick retaining walls need solid footings and correct drainage from the start or they will crack.

Provide design advice & brick selection

Pour concrete footings

Brick retaining walls need strip footings sized for retained height and wall type. We form and pour footings to engineer or site-specific standards before bricklaying begins.

Lay brick courses & install reinforcement

Install weep holes & drainage

Weep holes through the brick skin and ag pipe behind the wall are essential. Without them, moisture trapped behind the wall causes cracking, efflorescence and structural movement.

Yes — always. Weep holes allow moisture behind the wall to escape, preventing hydrostatic pressure and efflorescence that cracks brick and mortar. We detail weep holes at correct spacing on every brick retaining wall, combined with ag pipe and free-draining backfill behind the wall.

Low garden walls under ~600 mm may be exempt if not on a boundary. Between 600 mm and 1 m may qualify as Complying Development. Above 1 m typically requires a DA or CDC with engineering. Boundary brick walls often need approval regardless of height — and DIY brick walls are not exempt from compliance rules. Drainage is the most common cause of council rejection and structural failure — every wall we build includes a designed drainage system
